Leaving Protection by Will Hobbs, is about a boy named Robbie who left Port Protection to fish on a troller on the outside waters. Robbie is a boy who lives with his family in Port Protection, but he wanted to earn extra money by leaving to work as a deckhand on a troller. He met Tor, the owner of the Storm Petrel, a boat that Robbie wanted to work on. Tor decided to let him on and they were working right away early in the morning every single day. Robbie learned a lot of Russian history from the Russian plaques Tor had, and they went out to look for another and found it. Tor and robbie were drifting and they ended up in Lituya Bay where an earthquake happened causing a huge wave about 1,700 ft. up. They were expecting huge storms, but it was twenty two years overdue. Robbie and Tor had a lot of bad luck, and the storm happened while they were directly inside the bay. Fighting the storm, Tor got swept overboard nowhere to be seen again, but Robbie survived the storm and made it to the harbor. In the end Robbie met Grace, Tor's daughter, and they exchanged boats with their family, ready to fish on the outside waters.
One of the main themes is to never give up when a mistake is made. An example of how this theme is shown is when Robbie was going to leave the Storm Petrel and go home. I'm sure a lot of people have experienced that, even I did. Personally, I thought it was pretty ridiculous, because he's come pretty far, and that's what he wanted to do.
I would recommend this book to other seventh graders because this is a book for people who don't like reading. This is that kind of book, because it made me, a person who doesn't read, want to read books. I thought it was almost impossible to make me read books again, but ever since I read this book it was really hard for me to even put it down. People who hate reading but have considered it should read this book, because it would definitely make them want to read more.
